Steam Next Fest 2026 Doubles Demos, But Is Generative AI Stealing the Show with Mediocre Creations?

Steam Next Fest 2026 Launches with Record Number of Demos Amid AI Concerns

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • Steam Next Fest 2026 debuts with over 8,200 playable demos, more than double last year.
  • Concerns arise over the use of generative AI in game development, with 17% of last year’s demos disclosing such use.
  • Indie developers face challenges with game cloning and discoverability amidst the influx of new demos.

Steam Next Fest 2026 kicked off today, providing PC players access to an impressive array of playable demos. The number of available demos stands at 8,202, significantly surpassing last year’s figures. This event offers a prime opportunity for gamers to explore new titles ahead of the anticipated release of GTA 6 in November.

However, the influence of generative AI casts a shadow over the event and the Steam platform. Last June, approximately 17% of demos disclosed using generative AI, a number that may underrepresent the actual usage due to unreported cases. The prevalence of this technology has increased, raising concerns among developers and players alike.

The challenges posed by generative AI in gaming are becoming more pronounced. There has been an emerging trend of game cloning, particularly targeting indie games. Alliance Arts canceled the demo of their horror game Drunken Goddess Reflux citing fears that it could be quickly imitated using AI tools prior to its official launch.

In their cancellation statement, the developers of Drunken Goddess Reflux expressed that the demo could be “used to quickly imitate or replicate the game’s presentation and gameplay with AI or other tools.” Such concerns are valid; another indie title, Needle in a Haystack, is currently seeing a surge of hastily produced copies.

This deluge of new demos also complicates the issue of discoverability for indie developers. Those hoping to attract attention to their projects face significant competition from a multitude of other demos aiming for the same audience.

The rise of generative AI tools presents a complex challenge within the realm of game development. The future utility of events like Steam Next Fest, which have traditionally been valued for promoting new games, remains uncertain as the industry navigates these evolving issues.
