Layoffs Impact Sucker Punch Productions Amid Industry Turbulence
- Sucker Punch, the studio behind Sly Cooper and Ghost of Yotei, is experiencing layoffs.
- 26 employees have been affected, citing industry challenges and project needs.
- Ghost of Yotei sold 3.3 million copies shortly after launch and exceeded previous title sales.
Sucker Punch Productions, a PlayStation-owned studio known for titles such as the Sly Cooper series, Infamous, and last year’s Ghost of Yotei, has reportedly experienced layoffs impacting 26 workers. According to Aftermath, the details emerged from a former employee and an internal email sent to staff.
Studio leadership indicated that these layoffs were a response to the “shaky state of the industry” and the evolving requirements for their upcoming, unannounced game. In the email, the studio stated, “After carefully observing the challenges in the market and reviewing the team needs for our next project, we’ve decided to make some staffing reductions. Several positions across Sucker Punch will be eliminated as a result.”
The leadership acknowledged the difficulty of the situation, expressing, “We know this is a lot to take in, and we want to assure you that we did not make this decision lightly. We have given this a lot of attention and worked to support our affected colleagues during this transition as well as we can… There’s no getting around that this is a hard day. Next week we will go into more details about the future.”
Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch’s last release, was well-received, selling 3.3 million copies within a month of launch and outperforming other popular PS5 titles like Astro Bot during that period. While Sony has not provided updated financial figures since then, it reported that Ghost of Yotei “exceeded the sales of the previous title in the same period of time” when detailing financial results for the quarter ending December 31.
Ghost of Tsushima, a prior title from Sucker Punch, reportedly sold over 13 million copies across consoles and PC. However, recent indications suggest that Sony is shifting away from releasing its signature single-player games on PC. This underscores a harsh reality in the gaming industry—success does not shield developers from workforce reductions.
Additionally, the summer release of Ghost of Yotei: Complete Edition featured new content, including a roguelike mode, additional cosmetics, and a story-driven bonus episode titled Echoes of Sekigahara.
