Ubisoft Announces Closure of RedLynx and Layoffs at Ubisoft Singapore
- Ubisoft to close Finnish studio RedLynx, impacting up to 52 positions.
- 70 layoffs reported at Ubisoft Singapore, aligned with production needs.
- Ubisoft recognizes contributions of affected teams and commits to support.
Ubisoft has announced the impending closure of its Finnish studio RedLynx, known for developing the Trials series, and significant layoffs at its Ubisoft Singapore studio, which is involved in the production of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. The proposed closure of RedLynx is subject to local negotiations and could affect up to 52 positions, according to a statement from Ubisoft.
“Today, we informed our teams of a proposal to close RedLynx in Finland, subject to the local change negotiation process, which would affect up to 52 positions,” Ubisoft stated. Additionally, 70 positions at Ubisoft Singapore will be impacted to align the studio’s capacities with upcoming production needs, though the studio remains integral to Ubisoft’s global production organization. Ubisoft expressed its appreciation for the contributions of both studios, emphasizing its commitment to supporting affected teams throughout this transition.
Despite the planned closure, Ubisoft did not elaborate on the reasons for shutting down RedLynx. The last significant release from the studio was 2019’s Trials Rising, indicating its role may have shifted to support other initiatives since then. Ubisoft is in the midst of a comprehensive reorganization, redistributing several franchise titles under its new subsidiary, Vantage, and expanding the Ubisoft Massive label to encompass a broader range of brands.
RedLynx was acquired by Ubisoft in 2011 following the success of Trials HD, a motorbike platform game lauded for its puzzle-like elements. The studio’s leadership has changed since, with former CEO Tero Virtala moving on to remedy Entertainment and Antti Ilvessuo, the Trials creator, founding a new studio, Channel 37, for the crafting survival game The Last Caretaker, which is performing well in early access on Steam and is slated for a full release in spring 2027.
In response to the news about RedLynx, Ilvessuo remarked, “I’m proud of what we built at RedLynx, but my part in that story ended years ago. In 2012, Trials Evolution’s riddle started, and its final chapter is set in 2113. So even something we made back then still has most of its future ahead of it.” He further noted the importance of creating lasting work amid an evolving landscape.
On the other hand, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced has reportedly been well-received, surpassing 3.5 million sales shortly after its release. A version for the upcoming Switch 2 is reportedly in development, and the game received a score of three out of five stars in a review.
