Rockstar Games Employees Set to Vote on Union Recognition
- Rockstar Games employees will vote from November 12 to 26 on recognizing their union.
- If successful, the union would be the largest recognized in the UK video game industry.
- Legal proceedings related to alleged unfair dismissals will conclude on November 17 and 18.
A key date has been established for employees at Rockstar Games to vote on the recognition of their developer union. If the vote passes, it will result in the largest recognized union within the UK video game industry.
The voting period is scheduled from November 12 to November 26, providing Rockstar Games staff the opportunity to determine whether the company will formally acknowledge and engage with the Rockstar Game Workers Union regarding employee matters. Notably, these voting dates align closely with the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Recently, Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar’s head of publishing, stated to Bloomberg, “we go where the team goes. So if they want a union, they will have a union.”
This announcement comes amid ongoing legal disputes between Rockstar and the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) over the alleged unfair dismissal of more than 30 employees. The IWGB claims these firings were an attempt at union busting, while Rockstar defends its actions by citing gross misconduct linked to the sharing of confidential information in a union Discord group.
Originally, the legal proceedings were expected to conclude sooner; however, delays have pushed the final resolution to November 17 and 18. As a result, November stands to be a significant month for both Rockstar Games and its employees, with the possibility that by December, they will have a union representation and a major game release to celebrate.
