Spain’s Total Solar Eclipse Reveals Unusual Golden Corona and Striking Pink Prominence
Last week’s total solar eclipse provided a unique atmospheric display, particularly visible from Spain, where the Sun’s corona appeared with a distinctive golden hue. As the Moon occluded the Sun, allowing the solar corona—its outer atmosphere—to be visible, observers noted the corona’s atypical coloration, contrasting with its usual white or silvery appearance during eclipses.
The specific conditions during the eclipse contributed significantly to this phenomenon. In Spain, totality occurred while the Sun was nearing the horizon, necessitating that its light pass through a greater expanse of Earth’s atmosphere before reaching observers. This longer light path led to the scattering of shorter wavelengths of light, especially blue. Such scattering is similar to the processes that create the warm, orange and red tones seen at sunset. As blue light diminished, the warmer colors became more pronounced, resulting in the golden appearance of the corona.
Additionally, smoke from nearby forest fires provided an extra layer of atmospheric filtering, further enhancing the scattering effect and intensifying the warmer tones around the eclipsed Sun. This combination of low solar position and atmospheric conditions presented a rare visual phenomenon during the event.
A Striking Pink Solar Prominence
The eclipse also showcased a remarkable solar prominence, visible along the Sun’s left edge. Solar prominences are large, glowing plasma structures that are influenced by the Sun’s magnetic fields. This particular prominence shone brightly in hydrogen-related wavelengths, maintaining its vivid pink color despite the filtering effects of the atmosphere. Against the backdrop of the golden corona, this striking pink prominence added to the visual spectacle, making the already rare eclipse an unforgettable sight.
