Dr. Abby Cheng, an orthopedic surgeon at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, emphasizes that “osteoarthritis can cause knee pain and stiffness, which can negatively impact a person’s activity level, risk of falling, mood and general quality of life.” As cartilage diminishes, individuals can experience not just discomfort but also a decline in their general well-being.
Widespread Impact of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis affects more than just the knee joint. Patients may face difficulties in mobility that can lead to missed work and subsequent loss of income. This decreased activity can further amplify the risk of developing chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.
More than 30 million adults in the U.S. are believed to have some form of osteoarthritis, with the knee being the most commonly impacted joint. While often associated with older adults, approximately half of those diagnosed are still of working age. According to Dr. Cheng, “having weak leg muscles and being overweight or obese increases a person’s risk for knee osteoarthritis.” Other risk factors include gender, age, previous knee injuries, and family history.
Managing and Mitigating Knee Pain
For individuals already grappling with osteoarthritis, various management options exist to alleviate pain and improve mobility. Dr. Cheng suggests that adopting healthy lifestyle habits, alongside medical treatments, may help slow the progression of the condition. She states, “Eating more plants and less processed or sugary food reduces inflammation in the body, which can reduce pain from osteoarthritis in all joints.”
Common management strategies involve strengthening thigh muscles, using knee braces, taking anti-inflammatory medications, and considering injections or knee replacement surgery if necessary. Building tailored treatment plans in collaboration with healthcare providers can help individuals better manage their symptoms.
Even small lifestyle changes can yield significant benefits. Cheng notes that for an individual who is overweight, losing 10 pounds can alleviate up to 40 pounds of stress on the knees with each step. This reduction in pressure can greatly ease joint discomfort.
Preventive Measures to Lower Risk
Many strategies aimed at managing osteoarthritis may also be effective in preventing its onset. Regular physical activity is crucial; despite the misconception that running damages the knees, it can be part of a proactive lifestyle to lower osteoarthritis risk. Maintaining a healthy weight further reduces joint strain.
A nutritious diet that emphasizes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables while limiting processed foods can enhance overall health and possibly protect against the development of osteoarthritis.
Understanding Family History
Contrary to the notion that family history dictates one’s likelihood of developing osteoarthritis, Dr. Cheng clarifies that while genetics can play a role, there are actionable steps to lower personal risk. “Some people think that because a parent or grandparent had osteoarthritis, they will develop it too,” she said. “And while it’s true that osteoarthritis can run in families, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing a person can do to successfully lower their risk of developing it.”
By taking control of health through informed choices, individuals can potentially mitigate their risk for osteoarthritis and improve their quality of life.
