OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teens with Enhanced Safety Features
In response to ongoing legal concerns regarding the safety measures of AI chatbots, OpenAI announced the release of ChatGPT for Teens on Monday. This new product aims to address both safety issues and the challenge of AI-assisted cheating in educational settings.
ChatGPT for Teens incorporates a new feature called Study Mode, designed to encourage active learning. This feature provides guiding questions and step-by-step support to help teenagers engage with their studies more deeply rather than seeking immediate answers.
The product includes mechanisms to combat academic dishonesty. When the AI detects a user attempting to cheat, it will issue reminders to encourage the utilization of Study Mode. Additionally, the app supports quizzes and visual learning tools, along with settings that allow parents to establish when Study Mode is enabled by default.
However, the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain. Despite these safeguards, teens often find ways to bypass parental controls and restrictions. The true challenge will be assessing how well these new safety features hold up under real-world usage.
OpenAI’s previous version of ChatGPT, launched in late 2022 and quickly growing to 900 million weekly users, lacked dedicated protections for younger users. The company now asserts that the safety measures within ChatGPT for Teens will be active by default, aimed at minimizing access to harmful or inappropriate content. These guidelines are rooted in OpenAI’s Under-18 Principles, which the firm claims are informed by developmental science and expert guidance.
Additional tools for parental oversight include family tools to manage app settings, receive safety notifications, and set designated Quiet Hours. OpenAI is also partnering with CodeAI to further educate teens about AI, encompassing its operational fundamentals and how to effectively integrate it into their learning.
For educators, OpenAI continues to offer ChatGPT for Teachers, facilitating institution-managed access to AI within classroom settings.
