Silicon Data Secures $30 Million Series A to Launch GPU Futures Trading

The artificial intelligence (AI) sector continues to expand rapidly, with investments reaching hundreds of billions of dollars a year in data centers and GPUs. As a result, the cost of compute has emerged as the primary expenditure for companies developing AI products. However, a clear pricing mechanism for compute has yet to materialize, hindering firms’ ability to manage financial risk associated with fluctuating prices.

To address this gap, Silicon Data has successfully completed a $30 million Series A funding round. The startup’s goal is to establish a reference price for GPU rentals, serving as an index for Wall Street futures contracts. Plans are underway for the launch of compute futures trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) on October 5th, subject to regulatory approval.

This significant development was discussed in a recent episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, where Rebecca Bellan spoke with Steve Hou, head of research at Silicon Data. Hou emphasized the ongoing health of the AI buildout, asserting that current data counters the prevailing narratives about declining chip values and stagnant data centers.
