Alex Eala Aims to Build on Historic WTA Title at National Bank Open
After securing her first WTA Tour title at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington D.C., Alex Eala now faces a challenging path as she enters the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada. This tournament is the first WTA 1000 event of the North American hard-court swing and presents another opportunity for Eala to prove her standing among tennis elite.
Having recently reached a career-high ranking of No. 20 in the WTA standings following her triumph in Washington, this marks Eala’s inaugural competition as a Top 20 player. Despite receiving a first-round bye, she is not without significant challenges ahead. Eala, seeded No. 25, will open her tournament against American Alycia Parks, who defeated her earlier this year during the Australian Open in a match that ended 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Known for her aggressive returning style, Eala faces a formidable opponent in Parks, whose powerful serve is a threat capable of shortening points. Should Eala manage to overcome this challenge, she could confront No. 8 seed Linda Noskova in the third round. Noskova has already defeated Eala twice this season, with match scores of 6-2, 6-0 at Indian Wells and 6-2, 6-4 during the Berlin Open semifinals. Eala’s record against Czech players stands at 1-13, with her sole victory coming against Nikola Bartunkova at the WTA 125 Birmingham Open final.
The potential quarterfinal stage could set Eala against No. 4 seed Coco Gauff, followed by a prospective semifinal match-up with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, contingent on the seeds prevailing. Eala, a self-identified “competitive athlete,” holds a 9-4 record against Top 10 players, which includes her last five matches, underscoring her capability to elevate her performance against top competitors.
Having recently celebrated her most significant achievement, Eala’s focus now shifts to maintaining her momentum and demonstrating that her triumph in Washington was merely the start of her ascent in the world of tennis.
