Alex Eala Defeats Naomi Osaka to Reach WTA 500 Final
In a remarkable semifinal match at the Mubadala DC Open, Alex Eala of the Philippines emerged victorious over four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, winning 6-4, 6-2 early Sunday morning (Philippine time) in Washington, D.C. This win propels Eala into her first WTA 500 final and marks her inaugural championship match on hard courts.
Eala stands just one win away from making history as the first Filipina to claim a WTA singles title, having previously fallen short at the 2025 Eastbourne Open. The 21-year-old’s patience and precision were evident throughout the match, showcasing her growing prowess in the sport.
The first set began with both players holding serve reliably, but it was Eala’s return game that shifted the momentum. She broke Osaka’s serve in the third game to take an early lead of 2-1. Osaka responded quickly, converting on her fourth break-point opportunity to even the score at 3-2 after saving three break points against her own serve.
As the set progressed, Eala intensified her play, ultimately breaking Osaka’s serve again in the ninth game to serve out the set. Eala demonstrated superior ball-striking, committing only 10 unforced errors compared to Osaka’s 18.
In the second set, Eala maintained her strong performance, breaking Osaka’s serve right away and following it with a solid service hold to lead 2-0. Despite Osaka saving four break points in a critical fifth game, Eala regrouped and reached a commanding position by breaking Osaka’s serve once more, leading 5-2.
Sealing her victory, Eala held serve in the next game, completing a three-game run that clinched her spot in the final. Her impressive trajectory culminates in a showdown against the hometown favorite and world No. 3, Jessica Pegula, where Eala aims to secure her first WTA title.
