Selectors Face Dilemma Over Weatherald and Labuschagne After Defeat in Darwin
Following a surprising defeat in Darwin, Australia’s selectors are under pressure to make critical decisions regarding the batting lineup, particularly concerning Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne. With the Sheffield Shield season still nearly two months away, options for assessment remain limited.
As the reserve batter and wicketkeeper in the squad, Josh Inglis is considered a flexible player who can fulfill various roles, having previously made a century on debut against Sri Lanka. However, his top score in six innings since is a mere 32, making it unlikely he would step in as an opener without a shift in the middle order.
Among those likely to be considered next is Matt Renshaw, who has recently trained with the Test squad ahead of the Bangladesh series. Renshaw has 14 Test matches under his belt, with a top score of 184, and notably averaged 49.90 in last season’s Sheffield Shield. His recent form has positioned him favorably for selection.
Also under consideration is the 33-year-old Nick Patterson, who has demonstrated resilience throughout his career. With two Tests against Sri Lanka in 2019 and a remarkable average of 144.00, Patterson’s experience might be invaluable. He averaged 36.41 in the last Shield season and has shown recent form with a half-century for the CA XI against Bangladesh.
Emerging talent Oliver Peake, at age 19, has already participated in four ODIs but has an average of 26.00 from 13 first-class matches. Recognized by Ricky Ponting, Peake is seen as a future Test player, although his inclusion at this stage would present a notable risk.
Another interesting player is Tom Connolly, a left-handed batter and left-arm spinner who made his Test debut in 2025. Despite not having a first-class century, Connolly had a remarkable outing in the ODI series against Bangladesh, scoring 149. However, his continued development may delay his entry into the Test team.
Sam Kellaway, with a more extensive first-class resume of 44 matches and three centuries, is also generating interest. Some believe he deserves a shot over Weatherald based on his performance. He notably shone in matches for the Prime Minister’s XI and Australia A against England Lions, despite a recent duck for the CA XI.
Konstas has made headlines with his performance against Jasprit Bumrah at the MCG but finds himself lower in the selection order after a challenging tour of the West Indies and an underwhelming domestic campaign.
Meanwhile, the selectors have faced criticism regarding Andrew McSweeney’s early removal from the team. Tasked with opening against Bumrah in less-than-ideal circumstances, he managed an average of 28.05 last season. Despite three centuries at 49.08 for Northamptonshire in County Championship, McSweeney’s prior underperformance may hinder his chances for reconsideration.
