Barcelona Signs João Cancelo on a Three-Year Contract

Barcelona has officially signed full-back João Cancelo following the termination of his contract with Al Hilal. The 32-year-old defender has agreed to a three-year deal, marking him as the fifth signing for the Spanish champions this summer, after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Jesse Bisiwu, and Rodri.

This transfer represents a unique milestone in Cancelo’s career, as it is the first time he has signed a permanent deal with the club, although he has joined Barcelona on three separate occasions. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at the club and made a second return in January, also on loan.

Versatile in his positioning, Cancelo can play on either side of the defense and even as a winger. However, he has primarily operated on the left flank under coach Hansi Flick last season. At Barcelona, he will compete for a starting position with Alejandro Balde and young prospect Jordi Pesquer at left-back, while Jules Koundé, Eric García, and Xavi Espart remain options on the right.

Cancelo began his career at Benfica before moving to Valencia, Inter Milan, and Juventus. He joined Manchester City in 2019, followed by a loan spell at Bayern Munich in 2023. After a brief stint with Al Hilal, he returned to Barcelona, where he played a crucial role in helping the team secure the LaLiga title, becoming the first player this century to win four of Europe’s top five leagues. Throughout his career, Cancelo has also clinched league titles in England, Italy, and Germany, in addition to the Primeira Liga in Portugal.
