The club’s hefty investment of over €125 million in signing Diomande indicates a potential shift in their offensive and midfield dynamics. While most LaLiga teams kicked off their 2026-27 seasons during the weekend, Real Madrid will begin their campaign against Espanyol on Saturday, Aug. 22, with a match streamed live at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
Attack: Options Emerge for Right Wing
In Mourinho’s planned attacking structure, Kylian Mbappé is set to lead as the center forward, with Bellingham centrally located and Vinícius Júnior on the left flank, having recently secured a new long-term contract. A decision looms, however, regarding the right-side position: whether to deploy Diomande as one of two traditional wingers or to introduce an additional midfielder for better team balance.
Should Mourinho opt for a hybrid approach, Silva and Arda Güler would compete for the right-wing spot, while Diomande—the most expensive signing in club history—might start on the bench. His settling in at the club will play a key role in shaping his immediate impact and whether Real Madrid can capitalize on his pace or prefer a more controlled approach with Silva or Güler in the lineup.
Midfield: Who Will Partner Tchouaméni?
Aurélien Tchouaméni is poised to be a focal point in Mourinho’s midfield double pivot as the principal central midfielder. Following the club’s unsuccessful bid for Manchester City’s Rodri, the involvement of Tchouaméni appears secure, yet it remains uncertain who will accompany him.
Mourinho has several players to choose from, including Valverde, Silva, Güler, and Thiago Pitarch from the academy. Valverde is favored for pairing with Tchouaméni to establish a solid midfield foundation. Nevertheless, Silva remains an option for matches where Real Madrid is expected to dominate, owing to his ball-distribution skills and vision. Cucurella is set to anchor the left-back position, backed by Álvaro Carreras, while Ferland Mendy’s contributions may diminish due to injury concerns.
