Chelsea Confident Enzo Fernández Will Stay as Man City Fumbles Last-Minute Deadline—What’s the Story?

Chelsea Confirms Enzo Fernández Will Remain at the Club After £120 Million Valuation Not Met

Chelsea has stated that midfielder Enzo Fernández is expected to stay with the club for the upcoming season, after no team matched their £120 million ($161.8 million) valuation by the self-imposed deadline on Friday, sources reported to ESPN. The club had given potential buyers a specific timeframe to submit an offer for the Argentine international, who expressed a desire to leave Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.

In May, Chelsea made it clear that they would require £120 million for Fernández should he actively pursue a transfer. Despite reported interest from clubs such as Manchester City and Real Madrid, no formal offers were made. Sources indicate that the conditions verbally communicated by Chelsea regarding a potential sale have now expired, leading the club to anticipate that the 25-year-old will remain for the entire campaign, effectively ruling out a potential January move.

Contracted until 2032, Fernández was signed from Benfica for £107 million in February 2023. Chelsea has been insistent on securing a profit from the player’s sale. Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s new manager, José Mourinho, has expressed interest in Fernández; however, the club publicly stated last month that they would not pursue a bid this summer.

The situation is further complicated for Manchester City, which faces uncertainty regarding their own midfielder, Rodri, who has been targeted by Barcelona with two rejected bids. Rodri has one year remaining on his contract and is open to leaving the club.
