Cristian Romero Transfers from Tottenham Hotspur to Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid has confirmed the acquisition of Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of €35 million, plus an additional €5 million in variables, according to sources from ESPN.

The Argentina international defender spent five years at Tottenham after initially joining on loan from Atalanta in 2021. During his time in north London, Romero made a total of 156 appearances and netted 13 goals. One of the highlights of his Spurs career came in the 2025 Europa League final, where he received the Player of the Match award following a victory over Manchester United.

Romero was appointed club captain for the 2025-26 season but faced challenges with form and discipline throughout a campaign that nearly saw Tottenham relegated from the Premier League. In preparation for the upcoming season, Spurs have already bolstered their defense by signing two new center-backs, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke.
