Bangladesh Claims Historic Nine-Wicket Victory Over Australia
Bangladesh secured a historic nine-wicket victory against Australia shortly before tea on the fourth day of the Test match, dominating play throughout the game. Australia, opting to bat first, faced criticism for their decision as conditions improved on the opening day. They were bowled out for 198, and Bangladesh responded emphatically with a total of 426.
Australian captain Pat Cummins acknowledged the shortcomings of his team in the post-match presentation, stating, “I thought our preparation was pretty much spot-on. I thought it was excellent, so, yeah, no excuses.” He noted that Bangladesh was the better team, emphasizing their patience and discipline. “They outplayed us in all facets,” he added, reflecting on the challenges faced once Australia fell behind.
Opening batsman Jake Weatherald’s performances of 23 and a duck raised questions about his position, and Marnus Labuschagne was unable to convert a promising start in the second innings. When asked about potential changes to the squad for the next Test, Cummins stated it was premature to make decisions, though he recognized that such a defeat would prompt discussions regarding team structure. “We’re pretty good at bouncing back, so no doubt the batters and every group will get together and have a good think about this one and where we can improve,” Cummins said.
Two standout performances for Australia included Josh Hazlewood, who passed the 300 Test wickets milestone with impressive figures of 6 for 89 in the first innings. Cummins praised Hazlewood’s hard work and integrity in difficult conditions. Additionally, Cameron Green marked his presence with his first Test century on home soil, demonstrating strong potential despite the team’s struggles.
Former captain Ricky Ponting expressed the necessity for changes ahead of the second Test, stating, “I think it’s inevitable they have to make change.” He highlighted the need for rejuvenation in the squad, indicating possibilities for introducing new players to strengthen the lineup.
