Frenkie de Jong Addresses Fake News and Injury Concerns
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong publicly criticized misinformation surrounding his situation, expressing frustration over “fake news” that has “angered and irritated” him. The 29-year-old has been sidelined for months due to a knee injury, which has led to speculation about his commitment to the club and his relationships within it.
De Jong specifically called out journalist Gerard Romero for claims that he refused to play against Atlético Madrid in last season’s Champions League, calling the assertions “fake news” and stating, “It’s not true. It’s my dream to play for Barça — of course I want to play in Champions League matches.” He continued, expressing his disappointment with the current media landscape, where he feels many journalists prioritize publishing sensational stories over truth.
In response to suggestions that his relationship with head coach Hansi Flick and the club’s hierarchy has deteriorated, De Jong asserted that these claims are also false. He stated, “I have a very good relationship with [Flick]. We talk a lot,” and confirmed that he maintains communication with various club personnel.
On Romero’s Twitch channel, the journalist stood by his reports regarding De Jong’s situation. De Jong, meanwhile, acknowledged the public’s right to judge his playing abilities but emphasized that “fake reports affect me.” He reiterated his frustration with the media coverage that has surrounded him during his recovery period from injury.
The Dutch international’s injury, which he sustained during training, led to additional rumors about prioritizing participation in the World Cup over club commitments. De Jong revealed that while he initially believed the injury was manageable, further medical evaluations showed it to be more severe than previously thought. “I wanted to get all this off my chest so I can focus on my recovery,” he said, sharing his genuine disappointment at being unable to play.
Currently, there is no set timeline for De Jong’s return, but sources indicate that he is expected to be out for months.
