Elena Rybakina Defeats Coco Gauff to Advance to National Bank Open Final
TORONTO — Second-seeded Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan overcame fourth-seeded Coco Gauff, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 early Thursday to secure a spot in the National Bank Open final. Rybakina’s victory came just before 1 a.m., concluding a rain-delayed night session.
Rybakina, a six-foot tall player, has added to her impressive resume this year, having already won the Australian Open and the Stuttgart tournament, bringing her career victory total to 13. She will face seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland in the final.
Swiatek reached the finals after defeating ninth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine in a hard-fought match, finishing 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Swiatek broke Svitolina’s serve at love for a 5-3 lead in the deciding set and converted her second match point after taking a commanding 40-0 lead. The semifinal match was delayed by rain, starting about an hour later than scheduled.
With this victory, Swiatek secured her 25th career win.
