Glamorgan Wicketkeeper Chris Cooke to Retire After 2026 Season

Glamorgan wicketkeeper-batter Chris Cooke has announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2026 season, bringing to an end a notable 16-year career with the county. Cooke, 40, has played a pivotal role at Sophia Gardens and will retire after Glamorgan’s Division One campaign, their first top-flight season in 21 years.

Cooke, who succeeded club stalwart Mark Wallace behind the stumps in 2017, served as the club’s captain from 2017 until 2019. Wallace, now Glamorgan’s director of cricket, praised Cooke, calling him “the best keeper-batter” in the club’s history. Reflecting on his career, Cooke expressed a blend of pride and sadness, stating, “I feel incredibly fortunate to have fulfilled a childhood dream of playing professional cricket and to have called Wales my home for the past 17 years. It has been a privilege to represent the ‘Daff’.”

Cooke is looking forward to maximizing his final push in Division One, noting the strength of the current squad and the promise of the next generation of players. He concluded his announcement with a heartfelt “Diolch am bopeth” (thanks for everything).

Glamorgan Enhances Bowling Line-up

In another development, Glamorgan has bolstered its seam bowling attack by signing Pakistan left-arm seamer Mir Hamza and New Zealand pace bowler Raymond Toole for their Rothesay County Championship run-in. Hamza, 33, returns after a six-match spell in 2024 during which he took 12 wickets at an average of 35.5. He is set to be available for the last five matches of Glamorgan’s Division One campaign, which resumes away at Leicestershire on Thursday.

Hamza has represented Pakistan in seven Test matches, with his most recent appearance coming against South Africa in January 2025. Meanwhile, 28-year-old Toole, who has played domestically for Central Districts in New Zealand, was the leading wicket-taker in the latest Plunket Shield season with 35 wickets at an average of 23.57. He had brief spells at Essex and Durham and recently played for Glamorgan’s 2nd XI. Toole is also available for selection against Leicestershire.

Currently, Glamorgan stands fourth in Division One, just nine points behind leaders and defending champions Nottinghamshire, following their promotion back to the top tier after a 21-year absence.
