How Hardik Singh Became India’s Secret Weapon for World Cup Glory!

Hardik Singh Aims for Redemption in 2026 World Cup After Injuries in 2023

Hardik Singh, who once questioned why athletes shed tears over injuries, found himself in a moment of vulnerability on January 21, 2023. After suffering a hamstring injury against England on January 15, he failed a critical fitness test at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, leading to his exclusion from that year’s FIH World Cup. The absence of Singh, a vital player, was felt acutely when India subsequently lost to New Zealand in a shootout, leaving the team’s hopes of winning a home World Cup shattered.

“I didn’t want to be very negative at the time when I got the injury because the team had matches after that. I had to be strong. But I used to go on my own and cry,” Hardik recalled in an interview with ESPN as he prepared for his third World Cup as vice-captain. Opting to remain with the team instead of undergoing rehabilitation alone, he supported his replacement, Raj Kumar Pal, in adjusting to the squad ahead of a crucial match.

Singh’s journey from that emotional setback has significantly influenced both his playing style and leadership approach. He emphasized the need for athletes to understand that much is beyond their control, stating, “The biggest thing I learned from that World Cup is that nothing really is in your hands.” This perspective has become a guiding mantra for him and his teammates ahead of major tournaments.

The Paris Olympics Experience

Hardik’s decision to trust the process paid dividends at the Paris Olympics. After a rocky start, including a victory against New Zealand and a draw with Argentina, he found clarity through a shift in mindset, ultimately contributing to India’s second Olympic medal success. “I decided to let go; just do the things I have normally done throughout my time as an India player,” he explained.

As he prepares for the 2026 World Cup, Hardik holds that he has unfinished business, having previously faced defeats in the quarterfinals of both the 2018 and 2023 tournaments. The upcoming World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium represents a fresh opportunity. Hardik views the Netherlands as an ideal location for hockey, fueling optimism among the squad about their chances to win the nation’s first World Cup title since 1975.

“We have a strong core of players like Harman, Manpreet, and Mandeep, and I believe this is one of the best chances we’ve had,” he noted. Singh credits his improvement to coach Craig Fulton, among others, asserting that the data-driven approach employed by the coaching staff has transformed their preparation.

The Indian team approaches the tournament with confidence, reinforced by past experiences against high-ranked teams like the Netherlands and Germany. As two-time Olympic medallists, they prepare to embrace the challenge, an endeavor made more promising with a fit and focused Hardik Singh in the midfield—eager to end India’s lengthy World Cup drought.
