Barcelona Signs Rodri from Manchester City for €60 Million
Barcelona has announced the signing of midfielder Rodri from Manchester City in a transfer deal worth an initial €60 million, with an additional potential €16.5 million in add-ons. The 30-year-old player, who won the 2024 Ballon d’Or, is set to join a squad under manager Hansi Flick that aims to continue its recent success in LaLiga.
Flick emphasized the need for leadership on the pitch during his time at Barcelona, stating, “We need players with leadership on the pitch. This is important in the key moments.” Rodri, often referred to as “the computer who makes Spain tick” by coach Luis de la Fuente, exemplifies this leadership role. During the Euro 2024 round of 16 match against Georgia, he paused the game to direct his teammates, a move that helped Spain secure a 4-1 victory and ultimately win the tournament.
Rodri’s move is part of a significant summer overhaul at Barcelona, marking a departure from Flick’s previous two seasons, which saw limited signings. This summer, the club has also acquired João Cancelo on a free transfer, alongside Anthony Gordon for €70 million, Karim Adeyemi for €22 million, and Jesse Bisiwu for €8.5 million. The total expenditure this summer is approaching €150 million, aimed at bolstering the squad’s depth and capabilities.
Rodri’s arrival addresses the team’s gaps following the departures of high-profile players such as Robert Lewandowski, who left for Chicago Fire, and Ferran Torres, sold to PSG for €50 million. Barcelona is still in the market for a No. 9 striker, targeting Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, amid financial adjustments from player sales and wage bill reductions.
The changes come as Barcelona transitions from a trophyless campaign in the 2023-24 season to winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de España last season. However, expectations remain high for European success, as the club has faced challenges in the Champions League under Flick. The addition of Rodri is seen as a “statement of intent,” reflecting ambitions to reclaim the prestigious title since their last win in 2015.
On a personal level, Rodri is viewed not just as a strategic acquisition but as a critical piece in enhancing the overall chemistry and performance of the squad. His experience and trophy-laden career, which includes the Champions League and a World Cup, are anticipated to elevate the team’s prospects moving forward.
