Cincinnati Open: Swiatek and Sabalenka Advance in Strong Performances
MASON, Ohio — Iga Swiatek continued her impressive form at the Cincinnati Open, defeating Colombian Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-0 on center court. This victory marked Swiatek’s seventh consecutive win, having previously claimed the title in Cincinnati last year. Following her recent triumph in Toronto just two days prior, Swiatek noted, “It’s not like I was super tired after Toronto. I knew I just needed a little bit of rest. Usually one day before a tournament, I’m already in my match mode. But this time, I wanted to spend every hour possible just chilling.”
Also competing on Sunday, Aryna Sabalenka, who has held the No. 1 ranking for 95 consecutive weeks since October 21, 2024, advanced past Australian Talia Gibson with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2). Sabalenka’s win improved her record to 15-3 in Cincinnati since 2022.
After losing to Swiatek in the Toronto finals, No. 2-ranked Elena Rybakina bounced back with a victory over American Taylor Townsend, winning 6-3, 6-4. Rybakina, a semifinalist in Cincinnati last year, is seeking her 14th hard-court title in the city after her Australian Open win in January.
In men’s tournament action, tenth-ranked Taylor Fritz achieved a straight-sets victory against fellow American Alex Michelsen, 6-3, 6-4. World No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime also progressed, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-5. This match marked Auger-Aliassime’s return to hard court since March, following a withdrawal from Montreal due to a lower back injury, and he currently trails Tsitsipas 4-7 in their overall meetings.
American Madison Keys survived a tough match against Daria Snigur, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, sixth-ranked Mirra Andreeva secured her 40th win of 2026 by dominating Ukrainian Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-0. Daniil Medvedev advanced past qualifier Marco Trungelliti, winning 6-4, 7-5.
Young Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca, 19, made headlines by becoming the third teenager to reach the third round in Cincinnati, following in the footsteps of Michael Chang and Pete Sampras. Fonseca defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-6 (2).
