India Secures 3-1 Victory Against Germany in FIH Pro League
The Indian men’s hockey team achieved a much-needed victory in their FIH Pro League campaign, defeating Germany 3-1 in Rotterdam on Wednesday. This win follows a nine-match winless streak in the league, providing a morale boost to the Indian squad. The match was also notable for Manpreet Singh, who made his 413th international appearance, surpassing Dilip Tirkey’s record for the most international caps for India.
India’s offensive efforts were highlighted by goals from Mandeep Singh, Shilanand Lakra, and Nilakanta Sharma. The team showcased a significantly improved performance compared to their recent 3-2 loss to the Netherlands. India displayed enhanced ball control, maintained a solid defensive lineup, and capitalized on mistakes from a typically strong German side.
The scoring began in the seventh minute when Mandeep Singh converted a rebound after a crucial steal by Dilpreet Singh, slipping the ball through the German goalkeeper’s legs. Shilanand Lakra doubled the lead in the 13th minute, finishing off a play capitalizing on a misplay by Germany’s Linus Muller. The third goal came just five minutes into the second half when Nilakanta Sharma seized an opportunity from midfield after another German error, further extending India’s lead.
Germany managed to net a goal in the third quarter through Raphael Hartkopf but could not close the gap. Despite pushing for additional goals in the final quarter, India’s steadfast defense secured all three points.
Despite the victory, India’s ranking in the Pro League remains unchanged at eighth place with seven points from ten matches. Spain currently sits above them with eight points, while Pakistan finds itself at the bottom, yet to secure a win in the season. India is set to face Germany again on Thursday for the second leg of this matchup, followed by a clash with the Netherlands on Sunday. Next week, they will also compete against Pakistan and face England twice to conclude their Pro League campaign. The threat of relegation looms for the last-placed team, while the league champion will earn a spot in the LA 2028 Olympics.
