Indian Men’s Hockey Team Prepares for Crucial European Matches Ahead of World Cup
The Indian men’s hockey team is gearing up for eight vital matches in the European leg of the FIH Pro League, focusing primarily on preparations for the upcoming World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium. Under the leadership of coach Craig Fulton, the team recently faced tough competition in India and Australia, finishing without a win in their initial eight matches against Belgium, Argentina, Spain, and Australia, suffering five losses and three draws. They currently sit second to last in the league standings, just above Pakistan.
Defensive Challenges
Since taking charge, Fulton has emphasized the importance of a robust defensive strategy, a philosophy that previously earned India medals, including an Olympic bronze in Paris. However, during the first eight games, the Indian defense faltered significantly, allowing opponents to create numerous scoring opportunities, primarily through penalty corners. India conceded a staggering 66 penalty corner chances while managing to create only 21, resulting in 25 goals against—ranking them as having the second-worst defense in the league, just after Pakistan.
Although there was a slight uptick in defensive performance after the initial four matches, Fulton recognizes the need to address persistent issues. Prior to departing for Europe, captain Harmanpreet Singh stated the team’s focus has been on improving both penalty corner defense and attack. “We have worked extensively on penalty corner defense and attack. Hopefully, the mistakes we made last time won’t be repeated,” he noted. “We want to learn from those experiences and improve. Winning is always a priority for us, no matter which match it is, and these games will definitely help us.”
His sentiments were shared by teammate Amandeep Lakra, who emphasized the necessity of limiting penalty corners against their opponents. “Even if they are successful in hitting our feet, we have our goalkeeper and defenders who should prevent them from scoring,” Lakra explained, highlighting their coach’s constant advice to maintain defensive discipline.
Upcoming Matches and Statistics
The Indian team is set to face the Netherlands and Germany during their stay in Europe, before traveling to London for additional matches against England and Pakistan. Notably, both the Netherlands and England have exhibited higher penalty corner efficiency; while India converted only four of their 21 chances in the first eight games, the Dutch successfully converted 10 out of 34, and England capitalized on seven from 23 opportunities.
Fulton’s squad recognizes the importance of achieving positive results in these upcoming matches, especially given their previous struggles in Europe, where they lost seven out of their eight matches last season. The team’s performance against top-ranked opponents will be crucial for building morale ahead of the World Cup.
