India Defeats Italy 1-0 to Secure Spot in FIH Women’s World Cup Final
In a hard-fought semifinal match of the FIH Women’s World Cup qualifier held in Hyderabad on Friday evening, India triumphed over Italy with a 1-0 victory. This win not only secured India’s position in the World Cup but also set the stage for a final showdown against England.
India’s advancement to the World Cup was practically assured prior to this matchup, based on their standings in the FIH World Rankings. With this semifinal win, the need for technicalities became irrelevant as Sjoerd Marijne’s team prepared for Saturday’s final.
The solitary goal of the match came from Manisha Chauhan in the 40th minute, marking her first goal of the tournament. The goal had a stroke of fortune; Manisha’s dragflick initially deflected off an Italian rusher before bouncing off a defender on the line and rolling over into the net.
During the first half, India’s performance was marred by fundamental errors, as passes often went astray and traps were mishandled, stifling their ability to build momentum. Italy’s Lola Brea emerged as a constant threat, creating two promising chances in the opening quarter, both of which were thwarted by Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi.
India’s offensive efforts noticeably improved in the latter stages of the second quarter, generating multiple chances from open play and set pieces. However, Italian goalkeeper Lucia Caruso excelled with several outstanding saves, keeping India off the scoresheet until Manisha’s goal.
Italy nearly equalized in the final moments of the game after earning a penalty corner. Ivanna Pessina’s powerful dragflick was expertly saved by Bichu Devi, who moved swiftly to her left, marking the last significant action of the match.
Italy will now face Scotland in a third-place playoff, where the winner will claim the final slot available for this summer’s World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium. Meanwhile, India looks to build on their recent successes under Marijne as they head into the final against England.
