Afghanistan Edges Ireland by Three Wickets to Qualify for 2027 ODI World Cup

In a thrilling encounter, Afghanistan chased down Ireland’s 206 with a score of 207 for 7, securing their spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup in Southern Africa, largely thanks to the outstanding performances of Rashid Khan and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. This victory also leveled the five-match series at one game apiece.

At 176 for 7, Ireland appeared poised to defend their total. However, Rashid, who scored a crucial 37 not out, anchored the innings at a pivotal moment. Earlier in the match, he delivered a stellar leg-spin bowling performance, taking 3 wickets for 44 runs, effectively turning the tide against Ireland. Alongside him, AM Ghazanfar also contributed with 3 wickets for 29 runs.

Despite trailing in the series, Ireland put forward a spirited effort. After being 97 for 2, they stumbled under pressure from Afghanistan’s spin attack. Gavin Hoey emerged as a standout bowler, taking 4 wickets for 34 runs, including the vital wicket of Gurbaz, who scored 71 runs. Hoey’s efforts caused significant disruptions in the Afghan lineup, complemented by Mark Adair’s consistent bowling.

A record ninth-wicket partnership between Hoey and Jai Moondra, who scored 36 and 31 runs respectively, allowed Ireland to recover from a precarious position of 128 for 8. This partnership added 76 runs, showcasing impressive batting to combat the Afghan spin threat.

While chasing, Gurbaz capitalized on the bowling, reaching his eighth ODI fifty. However, Afghanistan faced setbacks with quick dismissals, including Sediqullah Atal and captain Rahmat Shah. Despite the challenges, Rashid maintained composure and played a carefully paced innings, driving the team to victory in the 45th over with the final runs off Harry Tector.

Yamin Ahmadzai, in his first ODI since 2022, played a supportive role with an unbeaten 4 runs off 26 balls. This victory marks Afghanistan’s entry into their fourth consecutive World Cup.
