Jérémy Jacquet Shines on Liverpool Debut in 2-0 Victory over Como
Liverpool secured a 2-0 win against Como in their final preseason match on Sunday, with Jérémy Jacquet making a notable impact by scoring in his debut. The 21-year-old, who joined the club this summer from Rennes for £60 million ($81 million), had been sidelined earlier in preseason due to a minor knee injury. Jacquet played 45 minutes alongside captain Virgil van Dijk at Anfield, showcasing his potential with several key interceptions before scoring just before halftime from a cross by Cody Gakpo.
Gakpo opened the scoring for Liverpool in the 23rd minute after a strong run by Jeremie Frimpong. The Reds had further opportunities, including a curling shot from Alexander Isak that hit the post, and another effort by Dominik Szoboszlai that flew just wide.
Como, fresh off a 1-1 draw with Premier League champions Arsenal, also created good chances but failed to capitalize. Jesús Rodriguez tested Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker with a sharp near-post save, while Van Dijk made a crucial interception to deny Tasos Douvikas a goal in the second half.
In addition to Jacquet, Uruguay international Ronald Araújo debuted for Liverpool, coming on in the second half after his loan move from Barcelona was confirmed. This victory provided essential match minutes for manager Andoni Iraola’s squad ahead of their Premier League opener against Newcastle United next Sunday.
Liverpool is still pursuing additions to their squad, continuing negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain for winger Bradley Barcola, with teammate Ibrahim Mbaye also being considered. Both players were not included in PSG’s lineup for their Trophée des Champions match against Lens on Sunday night.
