Jake Weatherald to Join Warwickshire for Early Stages of 2027 County Championship

Jake Weatherald, the Australian opener recently dropped from the national Test team, will play for Warwickshire at the beginning of the 2027 County Championship season. This move comes as Australia prepares for next summer’s Ashes series.

The 31-year-old made his international debut during the first Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series but was omitted from the Australian squad following disappointing performances, where he scored 0 and 23 in a shocking defeat to Bangladesh. His six-match Test average now stands at 20.36. Weatherald has been replaced by Matt Renshaw, who will partner Travis Head in the upcoming second Test in Mackay.

Weatherald’s prior experience in county cricket saw him score 483 runs at an impressive average of 60.37 in nine innings for Leicestershire earlier this year. Warwickshire confirmed his signing in a statement, stating that he will be based at Edgbaston for the early part of the Championship season.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Warwickshire for the 2027 season. Edgbaston is one of the great grounds in world cricket and the opportunity to represent such a prestigious county was something I couldn’t pass up,” Weatherald remarked, expressing his excitement about joining the team ahead of the Ashes.

James Thomas, Warwickshire’s performance director, noted: “Jake is a player we’ve admired for a long time. He is a proven performer who has scored heavily at the highest level and gives us additional strength at the top of the order.” He also highlighted Weatherald’s eagerness to impress during the summer.

The decision to sign Australian players just before the Ashes often raises eyebrows due to the limited opportunities for English players in overseas first-class cricket. Ben Stokes previously commented on this trend, pointing out the peculiar nature of touring teams being given opportunities in county cricket ahead of major series.

Warwickshire also hopes to welcome back Beau Webster next summer, as he described the club as his “second home.” Currently, their overseas players for the season include India’s Manav Suthar and New Zealand’s Will Young. The team sits third in Division One, trailing leaders Nottinghamshire by five points, and will be without injured player Sam Hain for their match against Sussex. Recently, left-arm seamer Keith Barker announced his immediate retirement, while the club extended contracts for players George Garton, Vansh Jani, Zen Malik, and Rob Yates.
