Mourinho Faces Challenge Integrating Star Players at Real Madrid

José Mourinho acknowledged the difficulty of incorporating Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, and Jude Bellingham into his starting lineup as he prepares for his first competitive match back at Real Madrid. While the trio are not “incompatible,” he emphasized the challenge of finding the right tactical roles for them. This upcoming LaLiga season opener against Espanyol is pivotal for Mourinho, who aims to reclaim titles for Madrid after the team went two years without major silverware.

Mourinho, in his first press conference since rejoining the club, referred to the trio as “incredible players,” but noted the complexity of integrating all of them effectively. He pointed out that Carlo Ancelotti, Didier Deschamps, and Thomas Tuchel had all successfully utilized these players in their respective national setups, but he faces a unique task in finding their best synergy within the club.

The challenge for Mourinho is compounded by the critical need to build a cohesive team following Vinícius Júnior’s decision to remain at Madrid and sign a new contract. Alongside the star players, club record signing Yan Diomande also enters the mix in shaping the attacking strategy.

Regarding the previous criticism of Madrid’s forwards for their defensive work rate, Mourinho stressed the importance of teamwork and commitment, stating, “We need to be a team, work hard, and not negotiate things that are non-negotiable.” He emphasized that dedication must be evident in every game.

Mourinho also addressed the relationship between midfielders Aurélien Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde, who had a troubling incident last season. He stated, “I arrived with a lot of information… but I decided to start from zero.” He observed normal interactions between the two players, indicating a positive environment.

While admitting the team missed out on signing Rodri, who transferred to Barcelona, Mourinho asserted that the current midfield, featuring Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga, Valverde, and others, is sufficient to meet the club’s needs. “I don’t think we have a deficit [in midfield],” he remarked, suggesting that Rodri would have simply been an added bonus.

As for the pressure of his return to Madrid, Mourinho reframed it as “adrenaline,” expressing positivity about the situation. “In the end, it’s about results,” he said, reinforcing the expectation of success at a club where not winning trophies is not tolerated.

Mourinho’s first match back at Real Madrid will be against Espanyol, and it will be broadcast live on Disney+ in the UK, which will showcase LaLiga matches every Saturday night.
