Lakshya Sen Claims First BWF Title of 2025 at Australian Open Super 500

Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen secured his first BWF title of the year at the Australian Open Super 500, defeating Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21-15, 21-11 in a final that lasted just 38 minutes. This victory marks a significant boost for the 14th-ranked player, following a challenging season in 2025.

Seeded seventh in the tournament, Sen showcased a balanced blend of defensive and attacking play, enabling him to control the match against an unseeded Tanaka, who struggled to cope with the pressure of the final. After a tightly contested start, Sen quickly established a 6-3 lead by engaging Tanaka in longer rallies and capitalizing on errors.

Although Tanaka managed to narrow the gap to 13-12 at one point, Sen surged ahead, demonstrating top-tier skill and pace. He soon found himself with five game points, converting his first opportunity when Tanaka drove the shuttlecock into the net. The second game began similarly, but Tanaka fell into a pattern of unforced errors, allowing Sen to enter the mid-game interval with an 11-5 lead.

Keeping his composure, Sen continued to dominate as Tanaka appeared increasingly resigned. He capitalized on the Japanese player’s mishaps, creating ten championship points, all of which Sen converted effortlessly. His celebration included raising both index fingers to his ears in a gesture of silencing external distractions, followed by heartfelt embraces from his coach, Yoo Yong-sung, and father, DK Sen.

With this title, Sen’s win-loss record for the year now stands at 23-18. This victory extends a streak of at least one title annually since 2022 and represents his first triumph outside of India since the Canada Open Super 500 in July 2023, as well as his first title since the Syed Modi International Super 300 last November.
