Sunrisers Leeds Defeat Welsh Fire by Six Wickets, Advance to Virtual Quarter-Final

Sunrisers Leeds secured their place in the Hundred Eliminator with a decisive six-wicket victory over Welsh Fire at Headingley. The win eliminated Welsh Fire from contention and positioned Sunrisers for a critical match against Manchester Super Giants, who currently lead them by two points in the standings.

Both teams entered the match following consecutive wins, and Sunrisers won the toss, opting to bowl first. The Fire struggled early, with Cassidy McCarthy conceding four wides in her first five deliveries. Kate Cross then dismissed Sarah Bryce lbw, leaving Welsh Fire in a vulnerable position. Freya Kemp and Georgia Voll attempted to stabilize the innings, but Deepti Sharma’s economical bowling soon had Voll trapped in front, reducing the Fire to 61 for 2 at the halfway mark.

Hannah Baker made a significant impact for Sunrisers, claiming two wickets in quick succession. Phoebe Litchfield executed a superb catch to remove Georgia Wareham, followed by Baker bowling Orla Prendergast for a duck. Although Annabel Sutherland dropped Kemp twice, the Fire’s run rate plummeted as Sunrisers continued to apply pressure. Baker finished her spell with figures of 2 for 15.

Despite the setbacks, Kemp fought back, launching a six off Jess Jonassen and finishing with an impressive unbeaten 72 runs off 45 balls. However, Welsh Fire’s final total of 121 for 8 was seen as underwhelming against a strong Sunrisers lineup.

Litchfield took charge in response, showcasing her form from the previous match against Birmingham Phoenix. She scored 55 runs from just 23 balls, hitting three sixes and guiding the score to 92 with the team needing only 52 balls. While Bryony Smith failed to score, Lauren Winfield-Hill and Annabel Sutherland contributed valuable runs, with Sutherland making 28 runs off 18 balls.

Captain Dani Gibson and Jess Jonassen rounded off the chase, sealing the victory with 26 balls to spare. Baker reflected on the match, stating, “The wicket did a lot for us to be fair and I was helped out by the fielders massively. Personally it’s about spinning it as much as I can but also varying my pace so it’s not predictable.”
