Carrick Dismisses Claims of Favourable Start to Premier League Season

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has responded to criticism suggesting his team has an easy start to the Premier League season, labeling such assertions as “ridiculous.” As he embarks on his first full season in charge, Carrick will lead his squad into their opener against Hull City, the Championship playoff winners, before facing runners-up Ipswich Town.

“I think, first of all, for all of us who know this league, there’s no favourable start,” Carrick said during a Thursday press conference. He emphasized the difficulty of facing newly-promoted teams, especially in an away fixture, stating, “a newly-promoted team away from home is a tough, tough game.”

Having secured the permanent managerial role after guiding Manchester United to a third-place finish last season, Carrick acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead. He remarked, “I’ve been involved in them in the past so I’m fully aware of what’s at stake, what’s coming at us on Saturday, what we’ve got to be ready for.”

United enhanced their squad this summer by signing Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos, and Karl Darlow. However, there have been no additional first-team signings since the flurry in mid-July. Carrick has expressed optimism about strengthening the team further before the summer transfer window closes, confirming that talks are ongoing regarding a potential move for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.

“We’re certainly working towards that and making the most of the situation that we have, and trying to improve things and trying to move forward,” Carrick noted. He insisted that the club is focused on concluding the window stronger than they began it.

Both Tielemans and Santos are expected to make their competitive debuts for United at the MKM Stadium, where Darlow is also likely to feature after recovering from a medical procedure at the end of last season. Meanwhile, players Benjamin Sesko and Matthijs de Ligt have returned to training after long-term injuries, while Mason Mount’s participation remains uncertain after he missed recent friendlies.
