Philippine International Challenge 2026 Kicks Off in Mandaluyong City

The Philippine International Challenge 2026 officially begins with qualifying rounds on Tuesday at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City, marking the country’s first Badminton World Federation-sanctioned tournament. This significant event not only offers local athletes the chance to compete on home turf but also provides important ranking points towards the BWF World Rankings, allowing them to improve their international standings without having to travel abroad.

Philippine Badminton Association secretary-general Shawntel Nieto expressed the organization’s enthusiasm for hosting this prestigious event, saying, “The association sent bids to host these tournaments, a proposal to the BWF through Badminton Asia, to host an International Challenge and an International Junior Series this year. Gratefully, they accepted, and with the support of and with the go-signal from boss MVP [Manny V. Pangilinan], we were able to plan out and bring it to life. So, we’re very excited about that.”

The tournament runs until August 2, followed by the International Junior Series at the same venue the following week, which will give emerging Filipino players an opportunity to showcase their skills on an international platform.

Featured Competitors

Kazakhstan’s Dimitri Panarin, returning after his participation in the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships, takes the top seed in men’s singles. Clarence Villaflor, ranked World No. 122 and a prominent figure in the local scene, leads the Philippine contingent, joined by noteworthy competitors such as India’s Manraj Singh, Alap Mishra, Indonesia’s Christian Adinata, and Malaysia’s Jing Hong Kok.

The women’s singles also features strong contenders, with Thailand’s Tidaporn Kleebyeesun, aged 21, securing the top seed. Her fellow countrywomen Yataweemin Ketklieng and Pornpicha Choeikeewong, along with Azerbaijani Keisha Fatimah Azzahra and Malaysia’s Siti Zulaikha, make up the top five seeds.

Representing the Philippines, Villaflor and four-time national women’s singles champion Mika De Guzman, who also holds a World ranking of 122, are both Top 10 seeds in their divisions. Additionally, three-time national men’s singles champion Jelo Albo looks to uphold the nation’s hopes in his category.

Filipino men’s doubles champions Julius Villabrille and Solomon Padiz Jr. are set to compete in the main draw, along with women’s doubles finalists Lea Inlayo and Jeya Pinlac, and the duo Hailene Diaz and Naeomi Gulpany, who start their campaign in the women’s doubles Round of 32.

Qualifying Matches

As the tournament progresses, more Filipino competitors will seek to qualify through Tuesday’s matches. Mark Velasco will compete against Saudi Arabia’s Mehad Shaikh, while JR Pandi faces Australia’s Ken Richardson; the winners will join Villaflor and Albo in the main draw. In mixed doubles, national champions Villabrille and Andrea Princess Hernandez will face Patricia Barredo and Filipino-born Australian Jan Mark Sotea for a position in the tournament. Another pairing of Padiz Jr. and Mary Destiny Untalan will compete against Vietnam’s Le Minh Son and Mai Thi Thanh Ngan for a chance to advance. In men’s doubles qualifying, Lance Vargas and Carlo Remo are set to play against Laos’ Namboun Luangamath and Phonesack Sookthavy.
