Several Athletes Unaccounted For After Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Police in Scotland have received reports indicating that “several” athletes are unaccounted for following the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Notably, the Ugandan news outlet NBS Sport reported that four members from Uganda’s boxing team did not return to their delegation before the scheduled flight back to Uganda on Tuesday. Additionally, the Pakistan Today newspaper has reported a missing boxer from the Pakistan team.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated, “Enquiries are ongoing to assess the circumstances, and early engagement is taking place with the Home Office.” This incident follows a history of cases where athletes have sought asylum after previous Commonwealth Games, including those held on the Gold Coast in Australia in 2018 and back in Glasgow in 2014.

Commonwealth Games CEO Phil Batty mentioned, “We’ve welcomed nearly 3,000 athletes to the city from 74 nations. We want to deliver a safe and secure games, so we work really closely with Police Scotland, the Border Force, and UK visas and immigration to make sure everyone arrives and departs in line with regulation.”
