Bangladesh Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto Aims for Consistency Following Historic Win Against Australia

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed that scoring runs against Australia’s bowlers during the first Test has provided his team the confidence to perform against any bowling attack. This sentiment comes after Bangladesh’s historic nine-wicket victory in Darwin, where they scored 426 in response to Australia’s first-innings total of 198, marking their first win on Australian soil since their tours began in 2003.

“Personally, I really wanted to face this kind of bowling attack because I always believe that if I can score against this kind of bowling attack, I’ll be able to score against anyone,” Shanto stated as his team prepares for the second Test in Mackay. He emphasized that competing against top-tier bowlers is a significant challenge that boosts confidence going forward.

In the first Test, Shanto was instrumental, scoring 84 runs and contributing to pivotal partnerships. He acknowledged the anticipation of extra bounce in Mackay, saying, “In these conditions, there will be a little bit more extra bounce than in Darwin. Before we came here, we had been preparing on this kind of bouncy track.” He also noted that a previous series against Zimbabwe had provided his team with valuable insights into playing on similar pitches.

Overall, Bangladesh displayed resilience, managing to bat through 138 overs, with notable performances from Tanzid Hasan, who made his maiden century, alongside Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who both contributed fifties. Shanto pointed out that their approach, including leaving balls outside the off stump, highlighted their recent improvement as a batting unit.

Shanto further explained their adaptive strategy, saying, “We have different plans for different conditions. We are not going to play every single Test match in the same way. We try to adjust to the conditions.” He highlighted the need for patience, especially given their limited experience compared to stronger teams.

Bangladesh’s coach, Phil Simmons, addressed the necessity of managing emotions following their victory, and Shanto assured confidence in his team’s ability to maintain focus despite the high spirits after going 1-0 up in the series. “As professional cricketers, we have to come back again and again when we are going to face new conditions and a new challenge,” he reiterated.

“It’s a proud moment for all of the players – even ex-cricketers from Bangladesh. But it’s done; I think it’s gone. We need to play five days of good cricket again,” Shanto concluded, underscoring the importance of the upcoming Test match against Australia’s bowling and batting attack as they aim for continued success.
