Nat Sciver-Brunt to Miss ODI Series Against Ireland, Charlie Dean Named Stand-In Captain
England’s Nat Sciver-Brunt will not participate in the upcoming ODI series against Ireland as she continues to manage a calf injury that has troubled her throughout the summer. Charlie Dean will assume the role of stand-in captain for the matches, which are scheduled to begin on September 1.
Sciver-Brunt’s injury has led her to miss the first three group matches of the T20 World Cup and several games in The Hundred. She did, however, contribute to the Trent Rockets’ triumph in the women’s title last Sunday. Earlier, she indicated to Cricinfo her likelihood of resting for the Ireland series.
On Monday, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Sciver-Brunt, along with Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell, and Amy Jones, will not be part of the squad against Ireland. Head coach Charlotte Edwards has opted for a “forward-looking” team to expand the player pool.
This change provides more leadership experience for Dean, who previously led the England team during the series against New Zealand and at the T20 World Cup. She is one of eight players from the 15-member squad that participated in the tournament. Alice Capsey has been designated as the wicketkeeper for the series.
The squad includes two uncapped players: seamer Grace Potts and keeper-batter Kira Chathli, both of whom have appeared in earlier squads this season. Allrounder Charis Pavely is also included, having made her T20 International debut against Ireland in 2024. Ryana MacDonald-Gay returns after 18 months, recovering from a lower-back injury sustained in 2025.
Edwards expressed enthusiasm about the series, stating, “It has been an incredible summer for Women’s Cricket already, and these three Metro Bank matches against Ireland make up an important series for us to complete our summer. The focus has rightly been on T20 cricket for much of this year, but with a memorable run to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final now behind us, this is a chance for players to display their 50-over skills and bank some valuable experience for the future.”
She added that this is an opportunity for talented cricketers to showcase their skills and potentially pressure future selections.
