Bruno Guimarães and Elliot Anderson Set for Community Shield Debuts
In Cardiff, Bruno Guimarães and Elliot Anderson are both poised to make their first starts for Arsenal and Manchester City, respectively, in the Community Shield following their high-profile summer transfers. Guimarães joined Arsenal from Newcastle United for a reported £75 million ($101.5 million) earlier in August, making a brief debut off the bench during a preseason friendly against Como.
The Brazilian midfielder will partner Myles Lewis-Skelly in Arsenal’s midfield, with club captain Martin Ødegaard also featured in the starting lineup. Lewis-Skelly, who began every preseason match for Arsenal this summer, retains his place despite speculation linking him to moves to Manchester United and Chelsea.
Meanwhile, doubts loom over the futures of Gabriel Martinelli and Ethan Nwaneri, both of whom have been excluded from the matchday squad. Martinelli recently attracted a €45 million ($51.8 million) bid from Galatasaray, and the Gunners appear eager to strengthen their options on the left wing, heavily pursuing Vinícius Júnior as a potential addition. Nwaneri is also in a precarious position after his loan spell at Marseille last season, where he struggled for playing time.
In a recent news conference, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addressed Nwaneri’s situation, noting the player’s growth during his time at the Stade Vélodrome. “I want him to be at the club, but in the middle, long term, what is best for the player? Ethan needs to play football, and if he stays here, it’s because we can guarantee that he can have those minutes,” Arteta stated. “Otherwise, it’s just something that is not good for anybody, I think.”
The Community Shield marks Enzo Maresca’s competitive debut as head coach of Manchester City, and he has selected a strong squad for the match. Anderson, the club-record signing, will take his position in midfield for his debut appearance, alongside Erling Haaland, who returns for his first display since his celebrated World Cup performance.
Notably absent from the squad is Spain’s World Cup winning captain Rodri, who has only recently returned to training, leaving his future at the club uncertain amid interest from Barcelona. Savinho has also not been named in the lineup amid rampant speculation regarding his future at Manchester City.
