Delhi Capitals Cricketer Abishek Porel Arrested in Kolkata on Sexual Offence Allegations
Abishek Porel, a cricketer for Bengal and the Delhi Capitals, was arrested by Kolkata police on August 11, 2026, in connection with allegations of rape and other sexual offences. His arrest follows a case filed against him on June 30, 2026.
Upon being brought before the High Court on the day of his arrest, the court addressed the situation involving electronic devices belonging to the accused. During an initial hearing on July 14, 2026, the petitioner’s advocate requested the police to take necessary steps to seize these devices, which reportedly contained obscene photographs of the petitioner. The court emphasized the need to protect the dignity and privacy of the petitioner.
The court noted that communication received on July 6 indicated that the apprehension of accused persons, specifically identified as respondent nos. 6 and 7, was essential for seizing the devices to prevent any data stored within from being shared. The police were directed to expedite the apprehension of these individuals and collect the electronic devices to prevent further dissemination of the contents.
At a subsequent hearing on August 11, the court was informed by the inspector in charge of Mogra Police Station that respondent no. 6 had been apprehended that night. A request was made to adjourn the proceedings, allowing the police to take appropriate measures following this arrest.
Abishek Porel has not participated in any competitive cricket since the conclusion of IPL 2026, in which he made only four appearances for his team.
