BWF World Championships 2026 Set to Begin in New Delhi
The 2026 BWF World Championships will commence in New Delhi, India, on August 17, bringing together the world’s elite badminton players for an intense week of competition. As the hosts prepare for the prestigious event at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Indian fans are eager to see if their national stars, including PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, and the men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, can secure a top podium finish by August 23.
Indian athletes have been prominent medal contenders at the World Championships for over a decade, reflecting a golden era for badminton in the country, particularly marked by a medal streak that began in 2011. Fans are hopeful that their home advantage will translate into success at this significant event.
Indian Entries and Draw Analysis
The 2026 championship will host Indian players competing in ten categories, with two entries in each discipline, four of which are seeded. Among the seeded players, Satwik-Chirag are fifth seeds in men’s doubles, PV Sindhu is seeded ninth in women’s singles, Lakshya Sen is 14th in men’s singles, and the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto are seeded 15th. The wider draw includes 64 players for singles and 48 for doubles, allowing for strong competition.
The Indian contingent also includes rising stars such as Ayush Shetty and Unnati Hooda in men’s and women’s singles, respectively, alongside other pairs in men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Sindhu’s Quest for a Historic Sixth Medal
PV Sindhu, 31, aims for a record sixth World Championships medal, currently tied for the most in women’s singles history. After winning the Japan Open Super 750 last month and displaying improved fitness and skill, she faces a challenging draw. If successful, Sindhu will likely have to confront third seed Wang Zhi Yi and sixth seed Putri Kusuma Wardani before a possible semifinal bout with world No. 1 An Se Young.
Sindhu’s journey begins against Ireland’s world No. 141 Sophia Noble, with potential second round opponents being either Bulgaria’s Stefani Stoeva or Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang. Another Indian contender in the women’s singles, Unnati Hooda, ranks 26th and will take on Myanmar’s Thet Htar Thuzar in her opener, likely followed by a match against 13th seed Michelle Li from Canada.
Men’s Singles: Uncertainty Surrounds Lakshya and Ayush
Lakshya Sen, known for his unpredictability, will start his campaign against Austria’s Collins Valentine Filimon, with potential matches against former champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn and ninth seed Alex Lanier looming in later rounds. While his past performances indicate he can challenge higher-ranked players, his form has been inconsistent since March.
Ayush Shetty will face defending champion Shi Yu Qi, a matchup that promises excitement given their previous encounters. Despite losing all three matches against Shi, Ayush has the potential for an upset, especially with the support of a home crowd.
Men’s Doubles Hopes Rest on Satwik and Chirag
Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, returning from injury, are regarded as India’s best hope for medals in the men’s doubles competition. The fifth-seeded pair have a first-round bye and face potentially easier opposition initially, but their real challenge lies in the third round against 12th seeds Ramond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin, who they have yet to face.
Success in earlier rounds could set up a rematch against their previous rivals, with another potential showdown against world-renowned pairs in the latter stages. Consistency and resilience will be key factors for them to navigate the competition effectively.
Women’s and Mixed Doubles
India’s mixed and women’s doubles teams face a steeper challenge given their recent form. Dhruv and Tanisha, while capable of surprises, will encounter sixth seeds Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui if they reach the third round. Meanwhile, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela aim to regain momentum after battling injuries, showing determination to push through in their events.
