Iga Swiatek Claims First Title of 2026 at National Bank Open
TORONTO — Seventh-seeded Iga Swiatek defeated second-seeded Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 on Thursday, securing her first WTA Tour title of the year and her 26th overall at the National Bank Open. The Polish player broke Rybakina’s serve early, clinching the first set in just 29 minutes.
Swiatek continued to dominate in the second set, breaking Rybakina again at 2-2 and sealing the match in a total of 75 minutes. Despite being the tour leader in aces, Rybakina struggled to establish her rhythm, as Swiatek’s consistent attacking play and impressive court coverage kept her opponent on the defensive.
As a result of this victory, Swiatek is projected to rise two positions to the sixth spot in the new world ranking, while Rybakina will remain at No. 2.
In the earlier doubles final, Katerina Siniakova and Shuai Zhang triumphed over Sara Errani and Nicole Melichar-Martinez, winning 6-3, 6-4.
