Taskin Ahmed Anticipates Test Match Against Australia in Darwin

Taskin Ahmed is set to open the bowling for Bangladesh in a Test match against Australia in Darwin, marking a long-awaited moment that has been 23 years in the making. “We are really honoured to be here to be playing the Test series against Australia,” Taskin stated. He acknowledged Australia’s status as one of the premier teams in the world, expressing pride in representing Bangladesh in such a significant cricketing event.

This moment is particularly special for Taskin, who has a longstanding admiration for Australian cricket. He made his international debut against Australia 12 years ago in a T20I match in Mirpur but has never played in Australia. Taskin’s early experiences include watching Bangladesh’s only Test series in Australia from home as an eight-year-old in 2003. “From my childhood, I’ve been watching Australia team players, like great fast bowlers, legendary players,” he remarked, showing excitement for the opportunity to face them now.

Bangladesh’s recent form provides some optimism as they recorded a historic 2-1 ODI victory against Australia just two months ago in Mirpur. However, Taskin noted that critical players such as Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Travis Head were absent during that series and would be present for the tests. Despite having made strides on home soil, Taskin recognizes the challenges of competing overseas. “That’s giving us really good confidence to play against them. But still, home and away, there is a big difference,” he asserted.

Bangladesh’s bowling lineup has faced setbacks, as key bowlers from the ODI series, including Nahid Rana and Mustafizur Rahman, are unavailable for the Darwin Test. The only player likely to join Taskin in Mackay is Shoriful Islam. This lack of support is compounded by a stark contrast in pitch conditions between home and away games.

In a recent practice match against a Cricket Australia XI, Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat, being bowled out for just 54 runs. Taskin described the experience as disappointing but acknowledged the necessity of adjusting quickly to the conditions. “That was a good preparation, but we lost,” he noted, maintaining a positive outlook for the main match.

Australian batsman Travis Head downplayed the significance of the practice match result, suggesting the focus should remain on the upcoming contest. “I’ve played in some pretty poor ones over the years as well… But I think internally they’d just be worried about Thursday,” Head commented.
