Alex Lees Leads Durham to 102 for 2 on Rain-Affected First Day Against Derbyshire

Durham captain Alex Lees demonstrated his skill on a rain-affected opening day of the Rothesay County Championship match against Derbyshire at the OurCoop County Ground, scoring an unbeaten 53 runs off 125 balls. His performance helped the Division Two leaders reach 102 for 2 when play was halted due to bad light.

Lees shared a second-wicket partnership of 61 runs with Will Rhodes, who contributed 23 runs before being dismissed by New Zealand seam bowler Brett Randell, who ended with figures of 1 for 25 after 11 overs. Ben Aitchison claimed the other wicket to fall as Derbyshire maintained disciplined bowling throughout the day, but Lees proved resilient, battling through 38 overs against challenging conditions.

Only 16 balls were bowled during the first two sessions, as thunderstorms delayed the start of play until 4pm. However, when action resumed, it began with a lively exchange. Ben McKinney hit Aitchison for six over wide long on, but was caught behind attempting to drive the ball two deliveries later.

A greenish pitch suggested that winning the toss was critical, with gloomy weather making batting a difficult task. Randell, who made history in March by becoming the first bowler to take five wickets in five balls in first-class cricket, maintained a tight line on his Derbyshire debut, conceding just 11 runs in his first six-over spell.

Alongside Randell, bowlers Anuj Dal and Nick Potts also proved challenging, compelling Lees and Rhodes to earn their runs in a contest that showcased competitive cricket. England off-spinner Shoaib Bashir was brought into the attack for a brief two-over spell, conceding only three runs. In their stand, Lees and Rhodes faced 133 balls for a partnership that emphasized the precise bowling from Derbyshire.

The partnership was broken when Randell switched to the Racecourse End, delivering a ball that Rhodes edged to second slip, where Aitchison took a sharp catch. As the light worsened, only five more overs could be bowled, leaving Lees to guide his promotion-chasing team through a challenging opening day.
