Lily Rabe Shines in ‘The Winter’s Tale’ at Delacorte Theater After a Decade Away from Stage
In 2025, actress Lily Rabe made a significant return to the theater following a 10-year hiatus, primarily spent in Los Angeles working on Ryan Murphy’s anthology series American Horror Story. Rabe described this return to the stage, which began with her role in the Lincoln Center Theater’s Ghosts alongside her husband, actor Hamish Linklater, as a “homecoming.” Her recent performance at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park marks a profound milestone in her career.
“If I do feel like I have a single theatrical home or stage, it would be that stage,” says Rabe, 44, currently playing Hermione in The Public Theater’s production of The Winter’s Tale, which runs through August 23. She expressed admiration for the Delacorte Theater’s evolution, stating, “It’s the same place in the best way,” and commended the venue for its $85 million renovation completed in 2025. “They just keep expanding it without ever going off course or changing the fundamental vision that makes that place unlike any other place… which is a theater that belongs to the city of New York.”
The Winter’s Tale is Rabe’s fifth production at Shakespeare in the Park, starting with her portrayal of Portia in The Merchant of Venice in 2010, a role that garnered her a Tony nomination. This season, she plays the tragic figure of Queen Hermione, who faces wrongful accusations from her jealous husband, King Leontes, regarding her fidelity.
“Every part of who she is resonates with me and inspires me — her devotion to her children, that she would do anything for her children,” Rabe shared, noting her commitment to the character’s truthfulness in the face of adversity. Rabe has three children with Linklater and a stepdaughter.
Reflecting on the importance of revisiting classic roles, Rabe mentioned a conversation with Linklater about the desire to return to certain plays. “What’s so beautiful about Shakespeare is you get to bring your soul, your current soul and your current experience, into whatever role you’re playing,” she explained. “There’s a reason that I think actors want to play these parts over and over again at different times in their lives.”
Rabe humorously recounted the physical challenges of performing outdoors: “You don’t. You’re hot, you’re sweating. It’s like you’re doing some Bikram Shakespeare sometimes.” She highlighted the importance of staying hydrated and the endurance required for performances in varying weather conditions.
In terms of pre-show preparation, Rabe emphasized her dedication to warming up well in advance. “I will never be a half-hour person. I’m always there well before the half-hour before the house opens so that I can go out and stand onstage and warm up,” she elaborated, describing her affection for Linklater voice work as part of her routine.
Ultimately, Rabe sees her roles in plays like The Winter’s Tale as reflective of contemporary issues. “I think that Hermione represents truth,” she stated, highlighting the character’s resilience and commitment to her honor, serving as a powerful legacy for her children.
After performances, Rabe enjoys late-night walks in the city, often contemplating her shows with Linklater. “Being in the city, there’s nothing like a late-night walk — even just walking out of the park every night,” she reflected, expressing her gratitude for having someone who shares her passion for theater and the associated discussions that follow their performances.
