Coast Guard Daughter Uncovers Widespread Brain Injuries After Rescue Boat Veteran’s Suicide
After 21 years of saving hundreds of lives on Coast Guard rescue boats, Brett Bonner died by suicide on a winter evening in 2025 at age 43, leaving behind his wife Jenna and five children—including his teenage daughter Kayleigh—after burning a pile of Coast Guard files on their living room floor. Following his death and burial without a headstone, Kayleigh, now 18, investigated whether her father’s career driving 47-foot motor lifeboats through 25-foot waves caused unseen brain trauma, distributing a 36-question survey modeled after Navy assessments to scores of active and retired surfmen.
Survey of Surfmen Reveals Widespread Cognitive Struggles
Out of the scores of questionnaires sent out, 77 active and retired surfmen responded with stunning admissions that shifted Kayleigh’s perspective on her father, earning her an A on her senior-year high school research project. While few respondents reported official Coast Guard head injury diagnoses, a vast majority detailed experiencing severe symptoms identical to Brett Bonner’s—including headaches, memory lapses, cognitive problems, anxiety attacks, and erratic mood swings that worsened over time.
A Decades-Long Decline Ignored by the Coast Guard
Brett Bonner’s medical trajectory included a 2009 PTSD diagnosis treated with Zoloft, a 2012 transition to full-time instruction at the National Motor Lifeboat School in Washington where daily surf training exacerbated his headaches and light sensitivity, a 2014 anxiety disorder diagnosis treated with Effexor, and a 2016 grand mal seizure following a boat rollover. Although a civilian neurologist subsequently identified gray blotches and abnormalities indicating multiple long-term concussions on his brain scans, the Coast Guard repeatedly returned him to active duty without referring him to Defense Department brain injury treatment centers.
The Coast Guard Acknowledges an Emerging Concern
While NATO and the U.S. Navy have conducted extensive research revealing that small boat wave impacts can jolt a crew member’s head with 60 times the force of gravity—causing permanent cellular damage and conditions like C.T.E.—the U.S. Coast Guard historically lagged behind other military branches by maintaining outdated brain injury resources and failing to conduct routine testing. Prompted by media reporting on Kayleigh Bonner’s findings, the Coast Guard publicly acknowledged wave-impact brain injuries as an “emerging concern” for the first time, joined a Department of Defense wave impact study, and initiated a comprehensive brain health program aimed at prevention and care.
