The hype for director Atsushi Nishigori’s highly anticipated original anime film Grotesqqque (formerly titled Grotesque) has officially reached a fever pitch! The official X/Twitter account for the project dropped a massive casting announcement on Monday, confirming that legendary voice actor Akio Ōtsuka will step into the role of the Space Agency Bureau Director for the film’s “A(E)liens” segment. Backed by powerhouse studio collective JOEN—a powerhouse partnership between Sony’s Aniplex, CloverWorks, Wit Studio, and Shueisha—this cinematic event is gearing up for a world premiere at the prestigious Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, which runs from July 16 to August 2, ahead of its official theatrical release in Japan on November 6.
An Omnivorous Three-Story Structure Backed by an Epic 35-Act Soundtrack and Metalverse Theme Song
Moving beyond standard single-narrative releases, Grotesqqque is structured as an omnibus film weaving together three distinct stories with entirely unique worldviews: “A(E)liens,” the pun-heavy “Yoroshiku★Girl” (also known as “4649 Girl”), and “Nocturne: Nuit Grotesque.” To amplify the atmospheric chaos, the production staff has assembled a staggering 35 musical acts to contribute across the omnibus. Among the heavy hitters, the band METALVERSE is locked in to perform the adrenaline-pumping opening theme song “Shoot Shoot Shoot,” while Haoto delivers the ending theme featuring poignant lyrics by momosu momosu. With Atsushi Nishigori pulling triple-duty as director, screenwriter, and character designer, Grotesqqque is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable cinematic trips of the year.
