The victim in the trunk was identified on Friday as 60-year-old Shukur Aikebaer, while the driver was identified as 67-year-old Zhengfeng Bo of Irvine, California, who authorities noted shared a prior working relationship with Mr. Aikebaer. A third occupant, 66-year-old Jianquan Bo, surrendered to law enforcement from the passenger seat and now faces murder and kidnapping charges, though officials have not clarified the exact relationship between the two Bos, who lived together in an Irvine residence searched by investigators.

The sequence of events began at approximately 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday with a 911 call reporting gunshots and a person screaming at a two-story residence on Monteverde Drive. Neighbors reported that power had uniquely cut out at the Aikebaer home prior to the incident, prompting Mr. Aikebaer to step outside to check the electricity before his 13-year-old daughter heard shots and a scream. Responding to the emergency call, deputies intercepted a speeding vehicle in the residential area, initiating a short pursuit that terminated roughly a mile away on Wandering Ridge Drive.

Home surveillance and audio captured by local residents documented the chaotic conclusion on Wandering Ridge Drive, where deputies issued commands via loudspeaker before multiple gunshots rang out. Video footage obtained by local news outlet KTLA shows Zhengfeng Bo striding to the rear of the sedan, opening the trunk with his back to deputies, and leaning into the vehicle where he fired a shot into the trunk. Authorities confirmed they were unaware a captive was inside the trunk until after deputies discharged their weapons and fatally struck the driver.

The violent episode shocked local residents in Chino Hills, a picturesque area known for rolling hills, mansions, and stucco homes. Adam Nijiati, a 40-year-old software engineer and family friend, described Mr. Aikebaer as a modest immigrant who came to the United States from China roughly 15 to 20 years ago to support his wife and three daughters through various business ventures, including house flipping and running a San Diego fast-food restaurant. While the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the source of the residential power outage and the motive behind the abduction, local residents like 64-year-old Debbie Maki expressed deep unease over the rare display of violence in their community.
