Jamie Lee Curtis Shares Discontent with Single-Camera Comedies

In a recent interview, Jamie Lee Curtis candidly expressed her dissatisfaction with single-camera sitcoms, including her experiences on the series New Girl, where she portrayed Zooey Deschanel’s mother in six episodes from 2012 to 2018. Speaking on August 10 at NBCUniversal’s Summer Backlot Experience, Curtis remarked, “I did a single-camera [show], which I hated.”

Despite acknowledging the show’s quality, Curtis criticized the filming format, stating, “It’s like doing a movie. You’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It’s silent and it’s awful. For me, awful.” The 68-year-old emphasized that her negative feelings stemmed from the single-camera structure, rather than the cast, which included Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, Jake Johnson, and Hannah Simone. She reiterated, “Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun.”

In contrast, Curtis hailed her experience on the multi-camera sitcom Anything But Love as her “favorite job ever,” indicating her preference for live audience interactions in her comedic work.
