Legal Threats Emerge Against Skyblivion Over Volunteer Contributions

⚡ Quick Read (30-Sec Summary):

  • A former volunteer is threatening to sue Skyblivion, alleging misuse of their contributed code.
  • The fan-driven project aims to remake “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” using Skyrim’s engine and is backed by Bethesda.
  • The Skyblivion team asserts confidence in their legal standing and has since removed the contested code.

Skyblivion, the long-running fan remake of “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” using Skyrim’s engine, is facing legal threats from a former volunteer over code they contributed to the project. This unofficial initiative is being developed by volunteers from the TES Renewal Project, which is also responsible for the Morrowind remake, Skywind.

Bethesda has granted permission for the project to proceed, provided that the team replaces all original game assets. The project continues to develop after the release of Oblivion Remastered by Bethesda in April 2025.

On 30th October, the Skyblivion team issued a statement via Twitter/X indicating that a disagreement had arisen regarding the “continued use and maintenance” of the volunteer’s contributions after their departure from the project. The Skyblivion team noted that the main concern revolved around their decompilation of parts of the contributed code, which they stated was necessary “to maintain functionality and fix issues” after losing access to the original source code repository.

According to the Skyblivion team, the former volunteer escalated the situation by issuing legal threats, including demands for the personal information of the team’s volunteer leads. The team described these demands as “something we couldn’t accept and think is disproportionate.”

Despite the ongoing threats, the team expressed confidence in their right to maintain the code submitted by the volunteer, citing consultations with legal counsel. To minimize stress on their volunteers and to ensure a clean break, they decided to remove the contested code and rebuild that part of the project from scratch.

The team reported that the legal threats persist, although it remains unclear whether a formal lawsuit has been filed. The identity of the volunteer has not been disclosed. The Skyblivion team urged the community not to turn this situation into a “witch-hunt” and extended their best wishes to the former volunteer, expressing a desire to resolve the matter swiftly and continue their work on the project.

In December, the Skyblivion team announced a delay of the project from 2025 to 2026.
