Welsh Fire Secure Fifth-Place Finish with 15-Run Victory Over London Spirit
Welsh Fire triumphed over London Spirit by 15 runs in their final match of the Hundred at Sophia Gardens, securing their third home victory out of four and a fifth-place finish in the tournament. Batting first after winning the toss, Fire posted a total of 138 for 7.
Fire made a strong start, racing to 49 for 1 during the powerplay, aided by Georgia Voll’s four boundaries. Freya Kemp continued her impressive form, scoring 26 runs off just 14 balls before her dismissal at a total of 74 effectively stalled the innings. Skipper Charlie Dean contributed with vital bowling figures of 2 for 18 from 20 balls, helping to restrict Fire’s scoring in the latter half of their innings.
Georgia Wareham, the captain, dominated the tail end and reached a half-century in just 34 balls, including 22 runs in her final eight deliveries, leading her team to a score that appeared defendable.
London Spirit’s innings had a feeling of resignation as Grace Potts claimed two quick wickets, dismissing both Grace Harris, who ended with a single-figure score, and Marie Kelly for a duck. Potts achieved figures of 3 for 9 across her first 15 balls, effectively dismantling the Spirit’s batting line-up.
While Charis Pavely attempted to stabilize the innings with some elegant strokes, including three consecutive fours, the Fire bowlers kept pushing back. Although Seren Smale and Deandra Dottin provided a brief spark at No. 8, hitting some boundaries, the task proved too steep for the Spirit. They ended their campaign with a total of 123 runs, resulting in a 15-run defeat. Other notable performances included Orla Prendergast, Sophia Smale, and Heather Graham, each taking two wickets alongside Potts.
Potts was named player of the match and remarked, “It’s always nice to start well and put the team in a good position coming out of the powerplay. There was a bit of swing up top and I just tried to bowl my best ball.” She also expressed her intentions to carry forward the confidence gained from the season despite the team’s inability to qualify.
