How King Harold’s Shocking Papal Choice Cost Him England’s Crown!

Lost Papal Letter May Reshape Understanding of 1066 and the Norman Conquest

New research from the University of East Anglia (UEA) indicates that a previously overlooked papal letter could alter historians’ interpretations of the 1066 Norman Conquest. Excerpts preserved in the Vatican archives suggest a significant political struggle in Rome, which may have influenced events in England. Evidence indicates that King Harold weakened his position prior to the Battle of Hastings by aligning with a faction opposed to Pope Alexander II during a conflict between rival popes.

The findings, published today by Yale University Press in a book titled Harold: Warrior King by Prof. Tom Licence, challenge the traditional view of the Norman Conquest as merely a dynastic conflict following the death of Edward the Confessor. Prof. Licence argues that the political and religious decisions taken in Rome had a role in shaping the outcome of the events at Hastings.

Political Struggles of the 1060s

The 1060s saw Western Christendom divided by a fierce dispute with two popes claiming authority—Alexander II and Bishop Cadalus of Parma, later known as Honorius II. The research suggests that England’s support for one faction may have influenced Pope Alexander II’s backing of William of Normandy’s invasion. According to Prof. Licence, “1066 was not simply decided on the battlefield at Hastings. The outcome may also have been shaped by decisions taken almost a thousand miles away in Rome.”

Licence posits that Harold’s papal policies may have inadvertently legitimized William’s invasion, which is seen as a “just war” by Alexander’s supporters. The excerpts from the lost letter indicate that England, once under the protection of St. Peter, had strayed from “the path of truth,” a sentiment reflecting the intense factional conflict of the time.

Contextualizing Papal Support

Pope Alexander II’s letter, dated after William’s ascent to the English throne, includes language that underscores the political struggles against Honorius and his supporters. Prof. Licence contends that rather than a straightforward criticism of Harold for oath-breaking, Alexander may have perceived England as having abandoned his faction for its rival.

“In the eyes of Pope Alexander’s supporters, it was no longer simply a battle for a crown, but a struggle against those they regarded as followers of Satan,” Licence noted. He suggests that after Harold’s assumption of kingship in January 1066, England’s relationship with the papacy soured, diminishing Harold’s claims to legitimacy.

Broader Implications

This revisionist view presents the Norman Conquest as part of a broader political struggle extending across Europe, not merely a succession dispute. The research posits that England’s alignment with Alexander’s opponents could explain the papal willingness to support the overthrow of Harold.

Prof. David Fergusson from the University of Cambridge stated, “Tom Licence’s research on the European context of the Norman invasion offers us a fresh perspective on the wider political currents that contributed to the events of 1066.” Similarly, Prof. Rory Naismith noted the significance of revealing the Roman dimension of 1066, highlighting the link between ecclesiastical authority and state power during this pivotal period in history.
